Job Summary:

This position is responsible for reading and recording usage data from City utility meters.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Reads gas, electric, and water meters along assigned route to determine consumption.
• Operates a handheld device to record meter readings.
• Operates a vehicle and walks along assigned route to record meter readings.
• Checks meters against normal consumption; identifies and reports leaks and outages.
• Inspects meters for unauthorized connections, defects, and damage.
• Performs utility disconnects and reconnects as directed.
• Completes service requests and work orders.
• Checks customer complaints and corrects service problems.
• Assists with training as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of city streets and geography.  
• Knowledge of customer service principles and practices. 
• Knowledge of meter reading principles and practices. 
• Knowledge of meter installation principles. 
• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.  
• Skill in problem solving. 
• Skill in prioritizing and planning. 
• Skill in interpersonal relations. 
• Skill in basic mathematics.
• Ability to communicate effectively both oral and written.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders.
• Ability to work independently.

Job Requirements:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Possess a high school diploma or GED. 
• Must have a valid driver’s license and driving record suitable for insurability.  
• The position requires working in inclement weather conditions. 
• Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job: walking for extended periods of time, bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling and lifting; working in inclement weather conditions rain, heat, cold, etc. (temperatures of over 90 degrees and below 32 degrees).
