Summary:
The Groundman is an entry-level position in the line of progression for Lineman. The position performs various labor functions assisting Linemen. The Groundman is expected to learn the Lineman job through on-the-job training as well as through classroom-type training provided by the City. Works under supervision of the Assistant Superintendent and direction of the Lead Lineman.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Carry out tasks in a safe and efficient manner
- Become familiar with the City distribution and transmission system
- Assist in the proper use and care of all tools and equipment
- Must be able to drive equipment and maintain a current driver license, and operate and maintain vehicles in a safe and efficient manner
- Loads and unloads line construction material on trucks, trailers and the warehouse
- May dig holes, erect poles and pass tools to linemen
- Learns to safely operate digger derrick, bucket truck, trencher, back hoe, etc.
- Observes lineman work, and anticipates Lineman’s needs for material and tools
- Assists Linemen in preparing materials for use at the work site
- Performs manual labor type tasks as assigned by the Lead Lineman
- Trains for Lineman position by learning on-the-job skills related to line work
- Maintains vigilance for safety hazards
- Perform other job-related work as required
Job Requirements:
- Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a GED
- Must have a valid driver’s license and a driving record suitable for insurability.
- Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) within six months
- Must obtain CPR certification within 12 months
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and equipment employed in the modern electrical power construction and supply
- Related experience is preferred
- Knowledge of safety rules including accident causation and prevention
- Must have good reading skills and have the ability to effectively communicate in order to understand plans, manuals, directives, and receive instructions
- Willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses/workshops.
- Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required and able to respond after hours for emergencies
- Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, climbing, stooping, and bending)
Physical Requirements:
- Heavy work requiring lifting of up to 100 pounds occasionally
- Reaching and lifting overhead is required
- Job requires standing, crawling, climbing, bending, pulling
- Majority of time spent outside
- Includes exposure to electrical burns, confined space, radiant heat, works at heights, and operates machinery hazards
- Some exposure to odors, gases, dust and dirt
