Job:                            Equipment Operator II

Department:          Water Distribution

Pay Rate:                 Grade 11     

Hours:                      Daytime hours (occasional overtime)

 

Summary:

This position performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks in the inspection, maintenance, and installation of the potable water distribution system.   Works under the supervision of the Water Department Superintendent. 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Install new water connections and mains; repair leaks and breaks
  • Tap water lines under pressure for the installation of new services
  • Set meter boxes; mix concrete; shut off service lines
  • Cut and thread pipe; locate and operate valves in making repairs on broken water connections, mains, valves and fire hydrants
  • Trace underground service lines with the aid of pipe locators and blueprints
  • Operate all Department equipment; backhoe, taping machine, pipe locator, sewer rod machine and other standard tools
  • Ensure the safeguard of all assigned tools and equipment
  • Utilize GIS and other tools to perform line locates and update current utility data
  • Perform other job-related duties as required

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the materials, methods, practices and equipment used in construction, maintenance, and repair of utility distribution systems.
  • Ability to operate backhoe, loader, dozer and light to medium duty trucks.  
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions, both oral and written, and communicate effectively with co-workers, citizens, etc.
  • Skill in the use of standard tools relative to the work.
  • Skill in basic computer operation and willing to learn new technology as needed.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Be a graduate from an accredited high school or possess GED.
  • Possess a valid driver license and driving record suitable for insurability.  Class A CDL preferred or must obtain within 1 year of start date.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and weekends in emergencies, as well as be on an on-call rotation.
  • Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, standing, squatting, bending, twisting, kneeling and lift a minimum of 50 pounds).  Performing manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions (temperatures of over 90 degrees and below 32 degrees).
