Job:                             Equipment Operator II

Department:            Landfill

Pay Rate:                   Grade 11        

Hours:                        Daytime Hours  (occasional overtime will be required)

 

Summary:

This employee conducts daily operations at the City Landfill.  Employee provides physical labor, conducts daily operations and inspects materials coming into the landfill for illegal drops.  Operates heavy equipment including a bulldozer, front end loader and other machinery to ensure landfill materials are properly covered with dirt according to landfill and EPA guidelines.

     

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Inspects all materials entering the landfill for illegal items
  • Observes dumping for compliance with proper procedures and safety guidelines
  • Computes vehicle capacity; and logs approximate amounts that are dumped
  • Uses bulldozer and front-end loader to crush and spread newly dumped waste; covers waste in accordance with EPA guidelines
  • Performs basic preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Keeps landfill clean of loose paper or items that could be carried away in high winds
  • Maintains fire lanes to ensure fire emergency has access to all areas of the landfill
  • Maintains areas inside landfill with lawn mower
  • Perform other job-related work as required

 

Job Requirements:

 

 

  • Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a GED. 
  • Two years of work experience using and operating heavy equipment
  • Ability to understand and observe all safety rules and procedures
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, and have a driving record suitable for insurability
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with supervision, co-workers, and citizens
  • Willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses/workshops. 
  • Able to work in inclement weather conditions
  • Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, climbing, stooping, and bending).
