Job Summary

The City’s fleet is valued at $18,000,000, consists of approximately 350 units, and is comprised of small motors, vehicles, heavy equipment, fire apparatus, aerial bucket trucks, vacuum trucks, ambulances, etc.

 

This position is responsible for supervision of the City’s Automotive Shop operation and asset management of the City’s fleet. Supervises assigned Shop personnel and coordinates the maintenance and repair of the City’s fleet.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives to enhance the efficiency and safety of Shop operations and review and revise periodically.  
  • Plan, organize, supervise, and coordinate all maintenance and repair activities of the City Shop.
  • Supervise assigned personnel to include job assignment, inspection of work performed, safety supervision, and vehicle/equipment use and maintenance.
  • Ensure ongoing development of employees in the areas of compliance, technical, and safety training.
  • Train and instruct City Departments with regard to proper usage, care, and preventative maintenance
  • Assure that assigned equipment is properly maintained and preventative maintenance is performed on schedule.
  • Establish priorities and develop schedules as necessary
  • Conduct analysis of individual units and the City’s fleet as a whole and make recommendations accordingly
  • Participate in and provide guidance for the Fleet Management Committee
  • Prepare and provide fleet maintenance reports as necessary
  • Assist in the development of departmental planning and budgets.
  • Maintain payroll information for assigned personnel
  • Perform annual employee reviews of assigned personnel
  • Ensure efficient systems for procurement of supplies, materials and inventories.
  • Assist in the purchase and salvage of the City’s fleet to include preparation of bid specifications
  • Oversee and manage maintenance and compliance of Underground Storage Tanks (USTs)
  • Oversee fuel and equipment delivery
  • Perform routine labor as required
  • Utilize Cityworks, Fleetmate, and other software as necessary
  • Conduct research periodically and recommend the implementation of new methods, tools, and software
  • All other duties as required

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, materials, and practices in the fleet maintenance field
  • Knowledge of asset management principles and practices
  • Knowledge of the principles of operations of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions and rear ends, electrical systems, brakes and suspensions, heat and air conditioning; and of mechanical repair of varied types of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles to include heavy trucks, automotive, heavy equipment, fire trucks, and hydraulic systems
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanic’s trade
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise personnel and to direct Departmental programs
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned personnel, other City departments, vendors, etc.
  • Ability to research and stay abreast of ch
  • Ability to analyze and prepare reports, records, and information
  • Ability to perform mechanic duties as necessary
  • Proficient computer skills preferred
  • Utilize and be willing to learn and implement technology and software as necessary.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED, and associate’s degree in automotive technology or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred
  • A minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience
  • At least five (5) years of demonstrated experience in vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance (diesel and gasoline); or any combination of education, training, and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position
  • Certifications in Fleet Management preferred.
  • Certifications in automotive and/or diesel mechanics preferred.
  • Certifications in engine/transmission, hydraulics, and/or brakes preferred.
  • Must be willing to attend continuing education classes to obtain/maintain certifications.
  • Physical ability to climb up/down ladders, bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, and heavy lifting
  • Possession of a valid Alabama driver’s license; Class A CDL preferred
  • Willing to travel, including overnight, to attend training occasionally as necessary
  • Willing to work over-time and non-standard hours as needed
  • Qualified to be insured under City insurance
