JOB SUMMARY

The Accountant will assist the Finance Director to improve the finance, accounting and budgeting functions.  Tasks will include implementing additional features of the financial software, refining, documenting and implementing workflows and developing standard operating procedures to improve efficiency, staff effectiveness and internal control in compliance with accounting principles, statutory requirements and City policy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Develop and maintain timely reconciliations of general ledger and bank accounts
Analyze the processing of financial transactions throughout the City operations to improve the quality, timeliness, accuracy, compliance and customer satisfaction.
Identify opportunities for improvement in processes, workflows, internal controls and staffing.
Assist with the testing, development, documentation, implementation and training of software applications to accomplish accounting best practices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Extensive experience in analyzing existing processes, identifying opportunities for improvement, documenting standard operating procedures, implementing revised procedures.
Ability to plan and organize work and carry it through to completion.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and all levels of management.
Must possess solid communication capabilities (both oral and written.)
Must work well in a team environment with sound negotiation and problem-solving skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must have an Accounting degree from an accredited four-year college or university.  CPA certification is desirable.
Prefer 5 years of increasing complex work experience in governmental accounting or a related field or equivalent experience. 
Possess computer experience on varied systems/applications. 
Must possess a valid Alabama driver's license. 
Willingness to work non-standard hours as required.
Must be willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses and workshops.
Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position.
