Hours:  Day Hours (On-Call Rotation and Occasional Overtime Required)

 

Summary:

This is a working position that provides leadership and direction to electrical utility workers in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City’s power system. Works under the general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent.

 

Primary Responsibility:

  • Exhibits leadership and expertise in the accomplishment of daily tasks; job completion, safety compliance, on-site verification of work performed and vehicle/equipment use and maintenance
  • Constructs, maintains, and repairs the City’s power system and performs other related work.
  • Performs, assists, and leads troubleshooting work in locating sources of power failure; repairs and restores electrical service in power system.
  • Ensures all safety procedures and regulations are adhered to when performing tasks; assists in monitoring all crew members to ensure compliance.
  •  Prepares estimates of material for jobs and helps to maintain adequate material in stock.
  • May operate backhoe, derrick truck, bucket truck, and test equipment as required for troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, removing, and/or installation of equipment.
  • Assists in the proper completion of digital and/or paper work orders, time-keeping, material tracking, record keeping, etc. as required.
  • Responds to after-hours outages and/or other incidents as scheduled, required, or determined.
  • Responds to emergencies during inclement weather.
  • Conducts training and mentors employees
  • Takes initiative in the implementation of new jobs, projects or functions as opportunities arise
  • Acts as supervisor in the absence of Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent as designated.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and equipment employed in the modern electrical power construction and supply 
  • Extensive knowledge of the geography of the City and its power supply jurisdiction as well as the location of primary and secondary distribution sites
  • Knowledge of work hazards and safety guidelines including accident causation and prevention
  • Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Knowledge of traffic control standards and practices
  • Knowledge of computers and willing to learn job-related software as assigned. 
  • Skill in reading to interpret plans, manuals, blueprints, etc.
  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot situations and provide direction under extreme duress.

 

Job Qualifications:

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited high school or possess a GED 
  • Must have at least 3 years of work experience in electrical distribution systems. Pole-climbing experience is required.
  • Must have a valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) and driving record suitable for insurability. 
  • Hold or have the ability to obtain a Journeyman Lineman Certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Required to obtain CPR certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses/workshops.
  • Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required and able to respond after hours for emergencies. 
  • Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, climbing, stooping, bending, crouching) and lift up to 75 pounds
