Job: Wastewater Treatment Operator Trainee

Department: Sugar Creek Wastewater Treatment

Salary:   Grade 13         

 

Hours: Daytime hours - Occasional Overtime                     

 

Summary: Wastewater Trainee learns the operations of a conventional wastewater treatment plant.  Works only when an experienced Operator is present.  Assist in various tasks, which include cleaning and maintaining facilities; monitoring controls, gauges, valves, meters, and assisting in the laboratory.  Incumbent works under the supervision of the assigned Grade IV Operator and the Wastewater Treatment Assistant Superintendent.

  Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the operation of the water treatment plant on an assigned shift
  • Assist in performing quality control and process control functions
  • Ensure adherence to safe working practices and procedures
  • Assist in performing precise laboratory tests and record the results
  • Assist in compiling, maintaining and updating plant operations logs and reports
  • Assist in performing and recording mathematical calculations related to plant operations
  • Check and maintain all equipment
  • Perform routine plant cleaning and maintenance to include backwashing filters at prescribed intervals and hosing filters and basins
  • Paint building and equipment
  • Assist in calibrating chemical feed equipment and laboratory equipment
  • Answer emergency calls
  • Operate mowers and power equipment
  • Perform other job related duties and special projects as required

Job Requirements:

  • Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a GED. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, with a driving record suitable for insurability
  • Required to obtain CDL class B within 3 months. 
  • Ability to understand general chemistry, and use basic arithmetic and geometry. 
  • Must attend various training and be able to receive Grade IV Wastewater certification within a 36 month time frame. 
  • Possess the ability to effectively communicate both oral and written
  • Ability to keep organized legible records. 
  • Willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses/workshops. 
  • Able to work in inclement weather conditions, which may include exposure to caustic/toxic chemicals. 
  • Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required and able to respond after hours for emergencies. 
  • Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, climbing, stooping, and bending).

This position is for a trainee position, however, if any candidate has a Grade IV Wastewater certification, the pay would be at a higher pay grade.
