Job Summary:

Assists in the administration of City information technology systems.  The Systems Administrator seeks to ensure that the necessary uptime, performance, resources and security of these systems are met.  This position reports to the IT Director.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Installs and configures software and hardware.
  • Researches, modifies, and applies patches, changes, and updates.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces various networking hardware including cables, routers, switches, etc.
  • Manages network servers and technology tools
  • Monitors, installs, and provides server maintenance.
  • Troubleshoots network issues and outages.
  • Manages system infrastructure including databases, testing computer equipment, firewalls, malware and other software and hardware
  • Performs daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs, such as backups.
  • Monitors performance and maintain systems according to requirements
  • Ensures security through access controls, backups and firewalls
  • Upgrades systems with new releases and models
  • Instructs and trains users o changes in hardware and software.
  • Sets up accounts and workstations as necessary
  • Provides help, technical support, and training to users as needed on a variety of programs and the use of products and with special projects as required.
  • Performs all other duties as needed.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of information technology hardware, software, and peripherals.
  • Knowledge of system security (e.g. intrusion detection systems) backup and recovery systems.
  • Knowledge of the principles used in analyzing, evaluating, modifying, installing, maintaining, expanding, networking, and testing information systems and technology.
  • Knowledge of network security principles. 
  • Knowledge of switches, routers, firewalls, fiber optics, and wireless technology.
  • Knowledge of help desk and user support principles.
  • Knowledge of job-related software programs.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and resolving computer hardware and software problems.
  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.
  • Skill in the installation and use of such office equipment as a computers, scanners, fax machines, copiers, multi-line telephone systems, cell phones, etc.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Positive customer-service attitude.
  • Ability to establish relationships with vendors and effectively communicate to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Ability to effectively manage projects. Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize work.
  • Ability to participate in setting strategic direction for systems
  • Ability to explain technical problems and offer solutions to those without technological training.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited high school or GED. Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline preferred.
  • Must possess a valid drivers’ license and driver record suitable for insurability.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience with networking systems, database management, and server operations management, or equivalent.
  • Certifications preferred (Microsoft; CompTIA A+, Network+, ITF+).
  • Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required.
  • Willing to travel to attend training as necessary.
  •  Must be able lift up to 50 lbs.
