Summary:

Employee is responsible for the inspection of the City’s sanitary sewer system to determine compliance with established standards, regulations and laws. This includes the inspection of all contract work (construction & maintenance) and food service facilities. Employee also manages the City’s FOG Program. Works under supervision of the Sewer Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serves as “FOG Educator” (Fats, Oil & Grease) on behalf of the City, to include conducting public education seminars, visiting local schools, attending local events, etc.
  • Performs inspection for compliance in grease removal devices (GRDs) to ensure the compliance with City Codes
  • Inspects permit holder documentation for accuracy and compliance.
  • Meets with new grease permit applicants to verify registration information
  • Provides education and training on the proper maintenance of GRD’s to food service facility owners
  • Determines the general level of GRD needed
  • Initiates fines and penalties as necessary to achieve compliance
  • Investigates and responds to reports of illegal discharges of toxic substances into sewers
  • Monitoring of remedial action when violations are found
  • Enters data, prepares reports, correspondence, and field maps relating to inspection activity; maintains records of inspections, test results, and action taken against dischargers
  • Daily inspection of contract work for compliance with contract drawings and/or documents.
  • Conducts final inspection of finished products to confirm all operations have been completed to job and customer specification
  • Coordinates first responder activities to sewer call; coordinates removal of small blockages
  • Performs all other job-related duties as assigned. 

Job Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited high school or GED. 
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record suitable for insurability.
  • Must work non-standard hours and overtime as required.
  • Two years’ experience in public utility or environmental field, compliance management preferred. 
  • Requires excellent communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate with contractors, business owners, general public, and other employees in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Basic computer skills required. Knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently, and capable of making field decisions on behalf of the city.
  • Must be willing to learn and effectively utilize job-related technology & software as required.
  • Must be willing to attend trainings/conferences and obtain certifications as required.
  • Knowledge of sewer-related laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Physical demands include but not limited to standing, walking, bending pushing and sitting. 
  • Working conditions include exposure to inclement weather conditions and malodourous environments.
