Hours:                      Day (occasional overtime)

 

Job Summary:

Performs skilled welding and mechanical duties at the journeyman level in maintenance and repair of all types of automotive, construction, and special purpose vehicles used by the City. Works under the general supervision of the Auto Shop Superintendent.

 

Essential Functions

  • Performs various welding duties in the repair and fabrication of parts and equipment used by the City.
  • Diagnoses mechanical problems and performs skilled tasks in mechanical repair and maintenance of gas and diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment using standard practices and equipment of the trade.
  • Performs assembly and disassembly work and engine repair on heavy equipment as required.
  • Performs routine maintenance on City vehicles and equipment.
  • Removes and replaces engines and transmissions as necessary; repairs and installs fuel pumps, alternators, and carburetors; balances wheels; repairs suspension systems, etc.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related automobile parts including computers, valves, pistons, connecting rods, piston rings, main bearings, air and hydraulic brakes, and the components of cooling, fueling, exhaust systems, electrical systems, heat and air conditioning systems, and tires.
  • Cleans and maintains orderly working areas in the City Shop; responsible for cleaning, preserving, and safeguarding mechanical tools and equipment utilized in the work.
  • Completes work orders in an efficient, timely manner.
  • Utilizes diagnostic software, work order software, etc.
  • Performs small engine repair as necessary.
  • Performs all other job-related work as assigned or required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of welding and fabrication
  • Extensive knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment maintenance, diagnostics and repair.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of transmissions and hydraulics.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, tools, and equipment of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in the use and care of hand tools, machine tools, and related equipment employed in mechanical and welding work.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific maintenance programs.
  • Ability to utilize independent judgement in diagnosing mechanical problems and determine the appropriate steps necessary for repair.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions, and to follow technical repair manuals and diagrams; ability to use diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other City departments.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must have graduated from an accredited high school or have a GED.
  • Possess a valid Alabama driver's license and a driving record suitable for insurability. CDL preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in welding, fabrication, and vehicle/equipment maintenance; or any combination of education, training and experience commensurate with the requirements of this job.  
  • Certifications in welding and automotive field preferred, including A/C Refrigerant Handlers  and ASE certifications.
  • Proficient computer skills required.
  • Must be willing to attend trainings and obtain certifications as necessary.
  • Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required.
  • Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position. Physical demands include but not limited to standing walking, bending, stooping, pushing, laying, and sitting. Ability to move/lift objects greater than 50 lbs.
