Job Summary:

This is skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of all types of automotive, construction, and special purpose vehicles used by the City. Employees in this class perform skilled tasks in mechanical repair, overhaul, and maintenance of all City-owned equipment. Incumbent works under the general supervision of the Auto Shop Superintendent.

 

Essential Functions

  • Perform general diagnostic, overhaul, and repair work on light, medium, and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel motors, and allied equipment.
  • Do assembly and disassembly work and engine repair on heavy equipment as required.
  • Repair and maintain vehicles and equipment assigned to all departments of the City.
  • Make complete overhaul of engines, manual transmissions, and rear ends, other than the machining of parts; repair and install fuel pumps, alternators, and carburetors; align front ends; balance wheels; repair suspension systems.
  • Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and related automobile parts including computers, valves, pistons, connecting rods, piston rings, main bearings, air and hydraulic brakes, and the components of cooling, fueling, exhaust systems, electrical systems, heat and air conditioning systems, and tires.
  • Perform small engine repair: weed eaters, power saws, lawn mowers, etc.
  • Clean and maintain orderly working areas in the City Shop; responsible for cleaning, preserving, and safeguarding mechanical tools and equipment utilized in the work.
  • Complete work orders in an efficient, timely manner.
  • Utilize diagnostic software, work order software, etc., as necessary.
  • Perform other job related work as assigned or required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of standard practices, tools, and equipment of the automotive mechanic' s trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of operations of gasoline and diesel engines, and of the mechanical repair of varied types of gasoline and diesel powered motor vehicles to include heavy trucks and automotive construction equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the   automotive mechanic' s trade.
  • Skill in the use and care of hand tools, machine tools, and related equipment employed in motor vehicle and heavy automotive equipment repair and adjustment work.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific maintenance programs.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical trouble in automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions, and to follow technical repair manuals and diagrams; ability to use dynamometer and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other City departments.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must have graduated from an accredited high school or have a GED.
  • Possess a valid Alabama driver's license and a driving record suitable for insurability. CDL preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience as a journeyman mechanic in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Certifications in the automotive field preferred, including air conditioning repair and ASE certifications.
  • Proficient computer skills required.
  • Must be willing to attend trainings and obtain certifications as necessary.
  • Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required.
  • Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position. Physical demands include but not limited to standing walking, bending, stooping, pushing, laying, and sitting.
