Grade IV Plant Operator - Wastewater Treatment

Job Title:  Grade IV Plant Operator

Department:  Wastewater Treatment

Salary:  Grade 17 ($20.40)

Hours:  12 Hour Night Shift (train on day shift)

Start Date:  10/1/2022

Summary:

Skilled working position responsible for the conscientious and proper operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.  This includes maintenance of building, grounds, and all related equipment.  The Wastewater Treatment Plant operator IV is required to make tests and observations required for the proper operation of the filtration plant and to satisfy the appropriate reporting agency regulations.  Incumbent works under the supervision of the Lead Plant Operator.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Participate in the operations of the waste water treatment plant on an assigned shift
• Perform quality control and process control functions
• Ensure adherence to safe working practices and procedures
• Perform precise laboratory test and record the results
• Compile, maintain and update plant operations logs and reports
• Perform and record mathematical calculations related to plant operations
• Check and maintain all equipment
• Perform routine plant cleaning and maintenance to include backwashing filters at prescribed intervals and hosing filters and basins
• Paint building and equipment
• Calibrate chemical feed equipment and laboratory equipment
• Answer emergency calls
• Operate mowers and power equipment
• Assist in the training and supervision of trainees
• Perform other job related duties and special projects as required

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

• Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a GED 
• Must have a valid driver’s license. 
• Must have (CDL) or able to obtain one within 6 months, and have a driving record suitable for insurability. 

• Must have 2 years of progressively responsible experience in the operations, maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment systems. 
• Be certified by the State of Alabama as a Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Operator.    
• Ability to understand general chemistry and use basic arithmetic and geometry. 
• Must be able to effectively communicate in order to receive instructions. 
• Ability to keep organized legible records. 
• Willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses/workshops. 
• Able to work in inclement weather conditions, which may include exposure to caustic/toxic chemicals. 
• Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required and able to respond after hours for emergencies. 
• Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, climbing, stooping, and bending).
