Job Title:  Fire Fighter/EMS Trainee (Part-Time)

Department:  Fire

Salary:  $10 - $12 per hour (Depending on Experience)

 

Summary

This is a working position that involves the training to control and extinguish fires and engages in search and for the preservation of life and property; including responding to all medical emergencies and administering of life saving measures as defined by the Alabama Department of Public Health and emergency medical protocol for a certified Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, Intermediate and/or Paramedic.  Works under the direct supervision of a Captain and/or Lieutenant. 

 

Full-time positions that come available will be filled from the part-time staff.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Learn to respond to fire, rescue and emergency medical events, hazardous materials response/mitigation and routine requests for help or assistance
  • Places equipment, lays and connects hose; operates high-capacity pumps and directs water streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses chemical extinguishers, safety belts, lines and hooks and uses self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Learn to enter burning buildings as part of a fire suppression team, perform ventilation tasks above ground, carry heavy objects and equipment and rescue injured or trapped victims
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions using the English language
  • Maintain physical conditioning necessary to perform efficiently in emergency situations; meet medical and physical agility standards as established
  • Learn the geography of the District, the location of important buildings and the street system
  • Participate in training drills; attend school and classes on firefighting, hydraulics, first aid and emergency medicine, fire equipment, and apparatus, and other classes associated with recognized fire fighter and EMT standards
  • Learn and apply technical information pertaining to fire fighting
  • Analyze and cope with a variety of emergency situations calmly but effectively and to react quickly to secure accurate and precise information on the location, extent, and nature of fires and emergency aid requests
  • Sustain heavy physical labor during periods of intense activity in emergency situations; to work at varying heights above grade
  • Learns to service and operate all District equipment and apparatus
  • Perform necessary maintenance, testing and care of fire hoses, trucks, ladders, and auxiliary equipment and apparatus
  • Prevent waste and damage of materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Perform general maintenance and minor repairs to station facilities; perform assigned janitorial activities and minor maintenance and painting
  • Ensures all safety equipment is functional; recognizes that safety is the first priority
  • and property; complies with all rules, orders, and instructions issued by superior officer
  • Establishes and maintains good working relations with the public; and responds to questions, complaints, and requests for information
  • Assist in responding to emergency calls involving fires, medical, hazardous materials, vehicle accidents, and emergency situations with a company
  • Learns to monitor and communicate effectively and coherently over radio channels exchanging information with dispatchers, medical professionals, and other department employees
  • Assist in properly operates fire service tools and equipment to include fire hoses, nozzles, appliances, and the components of sprinkler and standpipe systems
  • Provides or assists with emergency medical care as a first responder, provides rehabilitation support during emergency scene activities
  • Assist in locating water source; lays and connects hose, acts as nozzle or backup person in the direction of water streams, uses chemical fire extinguishers, and raises and climbs ladders
  • Maintains knowledge of and is familiar with all city fire codes and ordinances and state fire and emergency medical service laws and regulations in order to protect life
  • Maintains a current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws/regulations including current manuals, policy and procedures manuals, employee handbooks, and area maps
  • Prepares, inspects, inventories, repairs, and/or maintains fire equipment, apparatus, hoses, tools, materials, turnout gear, first aid equipment, and vehicles for safe operation; tests equipment on a regular basis
  • Performs the following duties: conducting fire station tours, securing station facilities, preparing meals, general housekeeping and station cleaning, and grounds maintenance
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements:

Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a GED.  Must be at least 18 years of age.  Must have a valid driver’s license.  Must have a driving record suitable for insurability.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification within the first year of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain an Emergency Medical Technician (Basic) certification within one (1) year of receipt of Firefighter I certification or within one (1) year of employment.  This job classification is considered to be safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug screens.  Requires the ability to deal with and relate to people beyond giving and receiving instructions.  Must be able to adapt to and perform under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.  Must be able to maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers, and citizens.  Must meet regular attendance requirements.  May be required to be on twenty-four-hour call and/or work rotating twenty-four hour shifts including weekends and/or holidays.  Must be able to effectively communicate in order to receive instructions.

The following requirements are normal for this classification.  Must be able to operate a variety of firefighting, rescue, and medical equipment, office equipment, and grounds maintenance equipment including extinguisher, pumper, hand/power tools, chain saw, generator, fans, ladders, hoses, breathing apparatus, emergency medical supplies, ropes, forcible entry and rescue tools, two-way radio, computer, printer, copy and facsimile machines, telephone, lawn mower, weed-eater, and motor vehicles.  Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for very heavy work.
