Job:                            Equipment Operator II

Department:           Street Department – Public Works

Pay Rate:                  $12.14           Grade 11        

Hours:                        Day Hours - occasional overtime will be required

Summary:

Under the supervision of the Street Department Superintendent, the employee operates one or more pieces of heavy equipment in the performance of moderately complex street and right-of-way construction and maintenance activities. The employee ensures that trucks are properly loaded and drives truck to the correct destinations.  The employee performs basic maintenance procedures on trucks and equipment.  The employee also assists crews performing other tasks associated with maintaining City roads and right-of-ways which may include work using hand and power tools.  The employee also may operate a patch truck and jet washer to complete assigned duties. 

Primary Responsibility:

  • Assists in inspecting roads and ROW for needed repairs
  • Repairs pot holes in City streets
  • Installs and repairs curbs
  • Constructs and repairs sidewalks
  • Performs standard repairs on roads and drains
  • Installs and repairs drains and culverts; measures and installs pipes; covers pipes with stone and compacts
  • Cleans and unclogs the City’s drains, ditches, and culverts
  • Performs daily and monthly safety and maintenance vehicle inspections on assigned equipment
  • Any other duties as required necessary

Job Requirements:

  • Be a graduate from an accredited high school or GED. 
  • Must be willing to work overtime and weekends in emergencies. 
  • Must have a valid drivers’ license, and a driving record must be suitable for insurability.  Class B CDL is preferred, or possess the ability to obtain a Class B CDL license within 6 months of hire
  • Knowledge of City rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of City road systems
  • Must be able to safely operate and maintain light to heavy trucks and equipment
  • Two years of work experience operating heavy equipment
  • Must be willing to learn how to operate any equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to effective communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Math skills to perform basic calculations
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, standing, squatting, bending, twisting, kneeling and lift a minimum of 50 pounds).  Walking for extended periods of time. 
  • Performing manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions (temperatures of over 90 degrees and below 32 degrees).
