Pay Rate: Grade 11
Hours: Daytime Hours (occasional overtime will be required)
Summary:
Sewer Operator maintains the municipal sewage systems to include the operation of heavy and sewer specific equipment. Performing a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks in the inspection, maintenance and installation of the sewer collection system. Works under supervision of the Sewer Superintendent.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Installation, maintenance, inspection and repair work on wastewater collection and including main lines and manholes
- Respond to emergency situations such as systems breaks or blockages, including locating affected areas, traffic control, and erection of safety barricades
- Troubleshoot and detect needed repairs of the City’s sewer system
- Accurately observe, record, and document conditions and report observations
- Skillfully use a personal computer and different programs as well as other office equipment
- Trace underground service lines with the aid of pipe locators and blueprints
- Operate backhoe, trencher, side boom, bulldozer & forklift
- Operate jet washer and vacuum trucks
- Perform smoke testing of sewer pipelines and identify defect locations
- Recognize and deal with hazards encountered in the course of work
- Perform other job related work as required
Job Requirements:
- Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a GED.
- Must have a valid driver’s license. Must obtain CDL within 6 months.
- Must have a driving record suitable for insurability. Must be able to effectively communicate in order to receive instructions.
- Willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses/workshops.
- Must be able to understand and have the ability to install pipe on grade and to understand plumbing systems.
- Must be willing to learn and operate the vacuum system, jet washer, bush hog, backhoe, bulldozer, jackhammer, gas detector, and air plugs.
- Able to work in inclement weather conditions and understand that work may include exposure to caustic/toxic chemicals.
- Able to work in confined spaces such as manholes and be able to enter manholes with 22”diameter.
- Able to lift up to 100 pounds.
- Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required and able to respond after hours for emergencies.
- Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, climbing, stooping, and bending).
