Pay Rate:            Grade 12

Hours:                Day Hours          (occasional overtime)

           

Summary:

This position is a working foreman position responsible for assisting with supervision of environmental services operations including landfill, waste management, recycling, etc. Works under the general supervision of the Environmental Services Superintendent.

 

Primary Responsibility:

  • Assists in ensuring environmental services operations comply with all Federal, State, and local regulatory requirements
  • Operates light to heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoe, tractor with attachments, brush truck with grappler loader, dozer, loader, excavator, etc., as necessary.
  • Performs routine labor as required (recycling, landfill, garbage carts, incinerator, brush pick-up, flagging, etc.)
  • Assists with complaint investigation and resolution and interacts with customers in a friendly and courteous manner.
  • Assists with questions and requests for information regarding environmental services operations.
  • Utilizes Cityworks software for receiving and dispersing service requests and work orders.
  • Assists with maintaining environmental services records and logs.
  • Trains and instructs personnel with regard to policies, procedures, safety and equipment.
  • Assists in supervision of assigned personnel to include job assignment, safety, inspection of work performed and vehicle/equipment use and maintenance.
  • Performs all duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of City ordinances, regulations, policies & procedures.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws regulating landfill and recycling operations.
  • Knowledge of City geography, road systems, and departmental routes.
  • Knowledge of landfill operations.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of operational hazards and safety rules including accident causation and prevention.
  • Ability to work independently without supervision.
  • Ability to interact with contacts and customers in a courteous manner.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement in interpreting and enforcing regulations, policies & procedures.
  • Ability to operate light to heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoe, tractor with attachments, brush truck with grappler loader, dozer, loader, excavator, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both oral and in writing.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, drawings, etc.
  • Ability to supervise assigned personnel, plan and delegate work, and troubleshoot issues independently.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited high school or GED. 
  • Must have a valid drivers’ license and driving record suitable for insurability.  Class B CDL preferred or must obtain within one (1) year of hire.
  • Must obtain and maintain ADEM Landfill Operator Certification.
  • Must have basic computer skills and be willing to learn new technology as needed.
  • Must willing to work overtime and weekends in emergencies. 
  • Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, standing, squatting, bending, twisting, kneeling and lift a minimum of 50 pounds), performing manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions (temperatures of over 90 degrees and below 32 degrees).
