Pay Rate:               Grade 14

Hours:                    12 Hour – Nights, 5:00 pm - 5:00 am      

 

Job Summary:

A dispatcher receives emergency and non-emergency calls, advising callers, and dispatching emergency units to specific locations as necessary.  Advises callers on the best course of action while on the line, and prioritizes emergency situations as needed.  Incumbent works under the general supervision of the Administrative Police Captain.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Handles all calls, emergency and routine for Police, Fire and Rescue
  • Operate a multi-line telephone console system, and TDD system for the deaf and hearing-impaired
  • Determine and assign the level of priority of the call and enter the data into a dispatch system for radio dispatch purposes
  • Perform emergency medical dispatch and crisis intervention services
  • Ask vital questions and provide pre-arrival instructions for emergency medical calls
  • Ask questions to interpret, analyze and anticipate the caller’s situation as to resolve problems, provide information, and dispatch emergency services
  • Enters call information and records into database
  • Submits call logs and caller information to law enforcement when necessary
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the geography of the City and it’s Police Jurisdiction to include the location of streets, important buildings, and other landmarks
  • Working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department
  • Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances
  • Exhibits the ability to remain calm in a crisis
  • Possesses excellent listening skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Pays close attention to detail
  • Possess strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Exhibit strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrates the ability to multitask efficiently

 

Job Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a GED
  • Obtain and maintain current certifications in:  NCIC/ACJIS; APCO Basic 911 (Association of Public Safety Communications Officials); APCO Emergency Medical Dispatch
  • Must complete required training during the first year of employment
  • Possess a valid Alabama driver’s license and a driving record suitable for insurability
