Job Summary

This is a working supervisory position requiring participation in maintenance and repair operations and assisting the Superintendent in administrative duties. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Auto Shop Superintendent and Facility Superintendent.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Performs skilled tasks as a mechanic to repair and maintain gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment
  • Utilizes independent judgement to troubleshoot and diagnose issues
  • Receives work requests and assigns work orders
  • Provides guidance to other Shop employees in the performance of their duties, and performs quality control to ensure repairs and work are done correctly
  • Maintains accurate records of maintenance and repairs, and prepares reports, work orders, and documentation as required
  • Locates and orders parts and supplies, and maintains inventory within the Shop
  • Generates purchase orders for service, repair parts, and supplies
  • Contacts equipment manufacturers to schedule service or repairs that cannot be performed by the Shop
  • Contacts vendors for vehicle and equipment information as necessary
  • Assists in developing and managing the preventative maintenance scheduling for all vehicles
  • Tracks consumption of all bulk POL products
  • Maintains journal and records for USTs and ensures compliance
  • Assists in coordinating fuel and equipment delivery
  • Assists with administrative duties such as budget preparation and tracking, employee timesheets, bid preparation, etc. as required
  • Assists in fleet asset management duties to include the review and recommendation of annual replacements, procurement, and salvage
  • Conducts research for troubleshooting maintenance issues, finding replacement parts, etc.
  • Helps clean and maintain orderly work areas ensuring safe working conditions
  • Ensures employees follow safety guidelines in the performance of work, operation of equipment, tools, etc. 
  • Assist in training and instructing City Departments with regard to proper usage, care, and preventative maintenance
  • Assist in management of pool equipment and vehicles as necessary
  • Utilize Cityworks, Fleetmate, and other software as necessary
  • All other duties as required

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment maintenance, diagnosis, and repair
  • Knowledge of the principles of operations of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions and rear ends, electrical systems, brakes and suspensions, heat and air conditioning; and of mechanical repair of varied types of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles to include heavy trucks, automotive, heavy equipment, fire trucks, and hydraulic systems
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanic’s trade
  • Ability to efficiently organize and coordinate daily Shop operations
  • Ability to effectively communicate with vendors, manufacturers, Shop personnel, other City departments, etc.
  • Ability to analyze and prepare reports, records, and information
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle and equipment problems and determine necessary repairs
  • Ability to perform skilled mechanical repairs to gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment
  • Proficient computer skills preferred
  • Utilize and be willing to learn and assist in implementing technology and software as necessary.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; associate’s degree in automotive technology or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred
  • At least five (5) years of demonstrated experience in vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance (diesel and gasoline); or any combination of education, training, and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position
  • Certifications in Fleet Management preferred.
  • Certifications in automotive and/or diesel mechanics preferred.
  • Certifications in engine/transmission, hydraulics, and/or brakes preferred.
  • Must be willing to attend continuing education classes to obtain/maintain certifications.
  • Physical ability to climb up/down ladders, bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, and heavy lifting
  • Possession of a valid Alabama driver’s license; Class A CDL preferred
  • Willing to travel, including overnight, to attend training occasionally as necessary
  • Willing to work over-time and non-standard hours as needed
  • Qualified to be insured under City insurance
