Job Title:  Animal Control Officer

Department:  Police

Salary:  Grade 10

Hours:  Daytime hours (occasional overtime required)

 

Summary:  

This position is responsible for the enforcement of animal control laws, ordinances and regulations in the City.  Works under the general supervision of assigned Police Captain.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Patrols assigned areas to locate and contain stray and potentially dangerous animals; delivers animals to designated facilities for disposition; ensures that animals are properly tagged and penned; cares for and feeds animals as necessary.
  • Investigates complaints about vicious, nuisance, or stray animals; issues warnings or court summons for violations; attends court and submits pictures and physical evidence.
  • Files complaints about biting animals
  • Prepares activity reports
  • Assists in maintaining equipment
  • Perform other job duties as assigned

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of animal control laws, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures in dealing with animals.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the area assigned to patrol.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and explain animal control laws, ordinances, & ordinances.
  • Ability to make clear, concise written reports.
  • Ability to operate animal control vehicle.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with coworkers, agencies, and the public.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Must be graduate from an accredited high school or have a GED. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record suitable for insurability. 
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with the public and/or animals preferred.
  • Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required. 
  • Willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses and workshops as required. 
  • Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, standing, squatting, bending, twisting, kneeling and lift a minimum of 50 pounds). 
  • Performing manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions (temperatures of over 90 degrees and below 32 degrees).
