Job Title:  Animal Control Officer

Department:  Police

Salary:  Grade 10

Hours:  Daytime hours with occasional overtime

 

Summary:  

This position involves performing of routine task enforcing animal control laws, ordinances and regulations in the City.  Works under the general supervision of Police Captain.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Patrol an assigned area and perform routine tasks in enforcing animal control laws, ordinances and regulations
  • Investigate complaints about vicious, nuisance, or stray animals
  • Pick up animals that are roaming or being kept in violation of laws and ordinances
  • Transport animals to the animal shelter
  • Feed and care for animals as needed
  • Operate animal control vehicles
  • Refer individuals who refuse to comply with animal control ordinances to the proper authority
  • Issue court summons for violation of ordinances
  • Attend court and submit pictures and physical evidence
  • Ensure that animals are properly tagged and penned
  • Assist in maintaining equipment
  • File complaints about biting animals
  • Prepare activity reports
  • Perform other job duties as assigned

 

Job Requirements:

  • Must be graduate from an accredited high school or have a GED. 
  • Have a minimum of one year of experience working with the public and animals or a combination thereof. 
  • Possess a valid Alabama driver’s license and a driving record suitable for insurability. 
  • Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required. 
  • Willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses and workshops as required. 
  • Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, standing, squatting, bending, twisting, kneeling and lift a minimum of 50 pounds). 
  • Performing manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions (temperatures of over 90 degrees and below 32 degrees).
