The Alexander City Gas Department is responsible for maintaining the city's natural gas system in compliance with Federal regulations. We have provided natural gas to approximately 4,200 customers since 1952. Our city currently maintains 150 miles of natural gas lines.

Important Safety Information

If you smell gas, you should leave the area and use a cell phone or a neighbor's phone to contact us immediately. We will promptly assign a crew to investigate the complaint. After the problem is located, we will secure the area, offer advice, and provide customer assistance.

Preventative Measures

  • Have your gas equipment serviced by a qualified service person periodically
  • Consider installing a CO detector
  • Keep flammable materials at least three feet from gas appliances
  • Do not hang objects from gas pipes
  • Never use the kitchen range as a heater
  • Know where the shut-off valve is at the meter (this valve should be closed only in the event of a gas emergency)
  • Teach small children to stay away from the gas stove and other gas appliances

Call Before You Dig

Alabama 811 is a service that assists customers by locating underground utilities, such as natural gas lines. Section 37-15-1 through Section 37-15-11 of the Alabama Code of 1975, requires a 48-hour notice prior to any excavation (landscaping, building, utility repairs, mailbox installation, etc.). A crew designated to locate natural gas lines will identify the lines in the designated area of construction at no cost.

Excess Flow Valve (EFV) Notification

Federal Regulation (49 CFR - 192.383(d)) regarding gas pipeline safety requires Natural Gas Utilities to notify customers of their right to request installation of an Excess Flow Valve (EFV) on their existing gas services line. If you would like to have an EFV installed on  existing natural gas service lines, such costs, if any, will be the responsibility of the property owner. Please contact our office for additional information.
