JOB:  Right-of-Way Technician I

DEPARTMENT:  Public Works – Facilities Maintenance

SALARY:  Grade 10

HOURS:  Daytime hours, with occasional overtime                                   

JOB DEFINITION

This is a working position with the primary responsibility of keeping City properties, facilities, and highway right-of-ways free from unseemly, or over grown vegetation.   Incumbent works under general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

  • Operate equipment such as bush hogs, backhoes, articulated boom cutters, pole saws, and chain saws.
  • Train and help instruct personnel with regard to policies, procedures, safety, and equipment.
  • Develop and implement new jobs, projects, or functions on an occasional basis.
  • Perform routine labor as required.
  • Participate in the City Litter Program.
  • Perform vehicle, tractor bush hog, and other equipment maintenance.
  • Perform all other tasks/duties as assigned by the Team Leader.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Extensive knowledge of City and Department policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Knowledge of safety rules including accident causation and prevention.
  • General working knowledge of all assigned equipment.
  • Writing skills to complete required forms and records.
  • Reading skills to understand plans, manuals, directives, instructions, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate information to Team Leader
  • Ability to work with required tools and equipment in a proper and safe manner
  • Ability to work well with general public and other necessary contacts

QUALIFICATIONS

Be a high school graduate, or hold a certificate of high school equivalency (G ED).   One (I) year of general mowing and equipment operation experience. Willing to work overtime and weekends in emergencies. Possess a valid Alabama driver's license and a driving record suitable for insurability. Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the posit ion.
