Job:                            Equipment Operator I (2 vacancies)

Department:           Street Department – Public Works

Pay Rate:                  $11.45           Grade 10        Step 1

Hours:                        Day Hours - occasional overtime will be required

 

Summary:

Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, the employee operates light to heavy duty trucks and equipment to complete the assigned tasks.  The employee ensures that trucks are properly loaded and drives truck to the correct destinations.  The employee performs basic maintenance procedures on trucks and equipment.  The employee also assists crews performing other tasks associated with maintaining City roads and right-of-ways which may include work using hand and power tools.  The employee also may operate a patch truck and jet washer to complete assigned duties. 

Primary Responsibility:

  • Operates standard dump-truck, back hoe, compactor, track hoe, and bulldozer.
  • Ensures trucks are properly loaded
  • Drives to work sites and unloads materials
  • Dumps and spreads dirt, asphalt, gravel, sand and other materials
  • Operates compactor as necessary
  • Performs daily and monthly vehicle safety and maintenance inspections on assigned equipment.
  • Maintains a log of materials hauled and destination
  • Performs flagman duties, as needed, while on road maintenance jobs
  • Any other duties as required necessary

Job Requirements:

  • Be a graduate from an accredited high school or GED. 
  • Must be willing to work overtime and weekends in emergencies. 
  • Must have a valid drivers’ license, and a driving record must be suitable for insurability.  Class B CDL preferred.
  • Knowledge of City rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of City road systems
  • Must be able to safely operate and maintain light to heavy trucks and equipment
  • One (1) year of work experience driving trucks and operating equipment and/or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must be willing to learn how to operate any equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to effective communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Math skills to perform basic calculations
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position (walking, standing, squatting, bending, twisting, kneeling and lift a minimum of 50 pounds).  Walking for extended periods of time. 
  • Performing manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions (temperatures of over 90 degrees and below 32 degrees).
